Newborn & Toddler Questions: Does Nighttime Get Easier

You’re blissfully happy, but exhausted. As a parent with a newborn, you wonder if there’s a light at the end of the sleep deprivation tunnel. Do things get easier with a toddler? There are a lot of changes between the newborn and toddler stages, and they all come with their own host of sleep-interrupting twists and turns.

A Newborn’s Wakeups

When a newborn wakes up at night, you’re already on high alert, ready to care for them. You glance over at the baby monitor camera app, but you’re already getting out of bed. Newborns need feedings, diaper changes, and even just soothing at night. They’re still learning the difference between night and day, and there will also be times when your little one just doesn’t feel comfortable. You might have to tend to them over four times a night, and for some parents, sleep will have to wait for another night.

A Toddler’s Wakeups

A toddler should be able to sleep through a whole night without wakeups. You might get used to that, but keep your newborn sleep monitor handy anyway. There will definitely be nights when your toddler wakes up, whether they kick off their blankets, have a bad dream they don’t understand, or you’re doing nighttime potty training. You’re not used to waking up in the middle of the night, so even though it happens less frequently, it’s a bit draining.

A Baby Monitor That Lasts

The best way to overcome every nighttime hurdle with an infant or toddler is by using a baby monitor with sleep tracking. You’ll do the heavy lifting, but the baby monitor will help you know when your baby needs you. In the early days, you can use it to track feedings and diaper changes and monitor heart rate, skin temperature variations, and oxygen saturation levels. In the toddler years, you can use it to see if your little one needs you when they wake up or if they just need another minute to settle down.

The best thing you can do is stay in the present. There will always be challenges as a parent, but what’s happening right now is the most important, even when you’re not getting much sleep.
